Why It Matters
THE NEED FOR TRANSPORTATION
HanTrúc — By the Numbers
Every year, millions of people are diagnosed with cancer in the United States. For many, the hardest part isn’t the treatment itself—it’s simply getting there. Across the country, transportation remains one of the biggest challenges for patients needing consistent cancer care. When someone cannot reach their appointments, the consequences can mean delays in treatment, interruptions in therapy, or even worse outcomes.
National Cancer Snapshot (2025)
-
Approximately 2.04 million Americans are projected to be diagnosed with cancer in 2025.
-
About 2.8% of cancer survivors—roughly 57,000 people each year—report delaying or missing treatment because they lack transportation.
-
An estimated 5.8 million adults delay medical care annually due to transportation issues.
-
Since 2005, the American Cancer Society’s Road To Recovery® program has provided over 9.5 million free rides to treatment.
-
A typical non-emergency medical transport (NEMT) trip in the U.S. costs $30–$60 for ambulatory passengers.
-
In some studies, as many as one in three patients experience significant travel burdens (50+ miles or over an hour each way).
Transportation Barriers and Health Outcomes
-
Cancer survivors facing transportation barriers have a 2.28 times higher risk of death compared with those without barriers.
-
Transportation insecurity is linked to a 41% lower rate of breast cancer screening among U.S. women.
-
Traveling long distances (50 miles or more) is associated with later-stage diagnoses and poorer outcomes.
-
Low-income, minority, and rural patients are disproportionately affected, carrying the heaviest burden of missed care.
The Cost of a Ride — and the Cost of Missing One
-
While the Road To Recovery® program provides free rides through volunteers, not all areas have enough drivers or vehicles to meet the need.
-
Ambulatory passenger rides: $25–$35 base fare, plus $3–$5 per mile (≈ $35–$55 round trip).
-
Wheelchair-accessible rides: $50–$100 base fare, plus $4–$6 per mile (≈ $65–$120 round trip).
-
Volunteer programs (like ACS): Free to the patient, funded through donations and sponsorships.
-
Each ride, no matter how small, connects a patient to a life-saving treatment that might otherwise be out of reach.
Why HanTrúc Cares
-
At HanTrúc, we believe hope should never depend on distance. That’s why a significant portion of our net proceeds go directly toward transportation programs for cancer patients who need help getting to their treatments. Every purchase funds a ride, every ride fuels hope, and every mile brings a patient closer to healing.
